"Awesome! Combine physicality and dance in a inventively explorative way, very post modern"

The Orphan of Zhao is one of China’s oldest plays and the first to be translated into a European language. Described as the Chinese Hamlet, it is a luminous reinvention of an ancient legend.

As with any classic, several stage versions exist, but is there a ‘true’ version? Mirroring the polarizing varieties of history told by those with different agendas, different versions will be told.

Stripping away verbal complexity, using only the strength and frailty of the human form, a deeper truth is explored, one beyond culture or language barriers. The bloody carnage of the tale is represented by the sweat and tears of hugely talented performers from Beijing and Hong Kong, without props or a set. The tension and contradictions of human nature found within this Chinese classic are reflected using a Western performance style that leaves the audience breathless and searching for more.
